DOST-PCHRD to support 3 Filipino startups for health R&D
The project entitled “The Beneficial Effects of Virgin Coconut Oil among Suspect and Probable Cases of COVID-19,” led by Dr. Imelda Angeles-Agdeppa of DOST-FNRI, conducted a community trial in Sta. Rosa City that evaluated the effects of VCO as an adjunct supplement for COVID-19 by mixing VCO into the cooked meals of suspect and probable COVID-19 cases.
Results of state-funded clinical trials on virgin coconut oil (VCO) in Santa Rosa, Laguna, which showed it was an effective “functional food” to help treat probable and suspect cases of COVID-19, has been published in an international journal.

Ang Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB) ay nilikha ng batas (PNHRS Act of 2013) upang protektahan ang mga taong kalahok sa mga pananaliksik na may kinalaman sa medisina. Ginagawa ang mga pananaliksik para patunayan kung mabisa at ligtas ang mga gamot bago gamitin ang mga ito nang mas malawakan.
“Required na ang pagdadausan ng clinical trials at ito naman ay hindi magtatagal siguro ng isang buwan or even less, ay gagawin sa mga lugar na mataas ang incidence ng COVID-19 at kailangan ay mataas na incidence na yun ay consistent over the last the last two weeks bago mag-umpisa ang clinical trials,” sabi ni Dela Peña.
Over 500 patients have benefited from the new “Axis Knee System” developed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)- Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), and Filipino-owned company Orthopedic International Inc. (OII)
